Restoration programme
Boleh is a historic junk yacht of unique design whose importance has been recognised by inclusion on the UK’s National Register of Historic Vessels (No. 2281) and by a generous grant form the National Historic Ships Fund.

Her restoration, using traditional skills and materials under shipwright Richard Uttley’s supervision, is a major project. A portfolio of the work of one of our apprentices can be seen here. The major work is being undertaken in seven steps and we are now embarking on step three.
Step 1 – Stripping Boleh down and surveying any damage
Step 2 – Dealing with the major outcomes of the survey such as repairing cracked timber and replacing the cabin structure
Step 3 – Refitting the interior structure
Step 4 – ‘First Fix’ replacing the current 40hp engine and systems
Step 5 – Fitting the new deck
Step 6 – ‘Second Fix’ of systems and interior fit-out
Step 7 – New masts and rigging
The object is to return Boleh as near as possible to her original condition and layout. It is recognised, however, that her future training role will require some modifications to reflect today’s standards of safety for the young people on board.
Programme completion
With the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund we hope to complete the restoration programme and have the vessel fully kitted-out and ready for training by the start of the 2014 season.
