Sail Boleh
Sailing and sail training are widely recognised as effective ways of building individual self-confidence and the ability to work as part of a team.
The charitable aims of the Boleh Trust are to help adults and young people disadvantaged in some way to develop these skills and thereby enable them to participate in society as responsible individuals.
Sailing can also be very enjoyable, challenging and fulfilling, providing great opportunities for group recreation and team building. With her unusual design and history, Boleh is perfectly suited to deliver a sailing experience which will benefit individuals and organisations alike.
Above all, Boleh’s ‘can-do’ story – of dreams brought to reality and challenges overcome – creates an inspirational environment for all those who sail in her. Combine this with the character of a totally unique, traditionally built wooden vessel and the experience of sailing in Boleh can last a lifetime. With over 80 days at sea in the past year, Boleh’s charitable programme has seen her sailing schoolchildren, pensioners, naval cadets, and Service personnel, as well as donors and corporate clients.
Boleh is a 40ft historic junk yacht built in Singapore by Malay shipwrights after World War II. Boleh (which means ‘can-do’ in Malay) was sailed to England by her owner and designer, Commander Robin Kilroy DSC in 1950. After an eventful life, Boleh arrived in Portsmouth on a low loader in 2008 to start a lengthy restoration, financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Finally returned to the water in 2015, Boleh is now a working heritage vessel based in Portsmouth Harbour.
Beautifully Restored Junk Yacht
A comfortable 16 tonnes with eye catching lines, generous accommodation and good deck space, Boleh is designed for ocean cruising with a fusion of Eastern and Western traditions. Boleh has a unique quadruped mast, a long-keeled sea kindly hull, teak decks and roomy living space with 8 berths. Restored to her original 1949 layout, Boleh is fitted with 21st century systems and is MCA coded, Category 2 for 8 persons and Category 4 for 12 persons.
Boleh now works with South Coast charities to sail disadvantaged young people and adults. Boleh is also available for commercial hire when her programme allows; the proceeds are then used to help deliver our charitable work.
