Boleh back in Portsmouth for the new season

By News

We are delighted to say that, thanks to Dean and Reddyhoff’s generosity, Boleh will be based at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour for the 2018 sailing season.  She is again looking forward to a varied and busy programme of charitable sailing, Open Days and corporate hire.  This year Boleh will also benefit from the Trust’s new links to the Association of Sail Training Organisations and the Royal Yachting Association.

Picture shows Boleh approaching her new home in Haslar Marina, Gosport on arrival from Chichester and her winter maintenance programme.

Robin Kilroy’s presentation portfolio

By Archive, Artwork/ Sketches

About this Item

A portfolio of photographs, sketches and maps, compiled by Robin Kilroy. There are maps showing the route taken by Boleh on her voyage from Singapore to Salcombe. There is also a detailed set of sketches showing the floor plan of the hull. Robin shows his artistic prowess in his sketches of marine birds and animals.

The portfolio includes some rare black and white photographs taken of the Boleh crew during her long first voyage, and of some of the stages of construction of the junk yacht in Singapore. Robin used this portfolio to give lectures on his fascinating story, during the 1950’s.

Boleh heads for the Oscars

By News

Not only has Boleh made a recent TV appearance with Michael Portillo (she can be seen towards the end of his Great British Railway Journeys episode that travels from Chichester to Cowes), she now stars in her own video on the My Classic Boat channel!   Filmed by Bob Aylott, founder of the channel dedicated to classic sailing boats, Boleh’s unique design and history are explained on YouTube as she enjoys a boisterous day’s sailing in the Solent.  Click on the link below or go to myclassicboat.com and get afloat!

Boleh joins the Navy!

By News

We are delighted to finish the year on a positive note and report that Boleh’s first full sailing season since her restoration concluded with a month on charter to the Royal Navy.

Based alongside HMS BRISTOL in Portsmouth harbour, she delivered a day-sail programme for Naval cadets. The picture shows Boleh – designed and built in 1949 by Naval fighter pilot Robin Kilroy DSC – heading down harbour towards the Navy’s new Aircraft Carrier HMS QUEEN ELIZABETH.

This will be our last news item of 2017 and we would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our friends and followers for their continued support throughout the year and wish everyone a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year!

Boleh Sails Old Friends

By News

Boleh’s programme this Summer has included sailing many old friends and it was a special day in August which reconnected Portsmouth’s Charter Academy with the Boleh workshops at Henderson Road. The Boleh Trust worked closely with Academy pupils during the vessel’s restoration and Luke, pictured with fellow former pupil, Laura (now a qualified Skipper), has followed Boleh’s progress since Year 7.

We are grateful to John Gillard, Principal of the charity Oarsome Chance and a former adviser to the Boleh Trust, for arranging this welcome reunion. The Oarsome Chance Foundation (see link below) aims to help young people who are not succeeding in mainstream education. The charity is setting up a boatbuilding facility in Gosport and has similar aims to our own. As Boleh will be based in the Marina there next year, we hope we can work together to our mutual advantage.
